need a little help setting up bridged mono

alright. i am runnning my rbi in a qsc plx 1202 i would like to run it bridged mono but i havent messed with it yet because i read some things that i need to mess with the cables and stuff. i know which switches to put were. i am using an unbalenced cable from the rbi to the qsc in and then a cheap speakon to 1/4 cable from the qsc out to my cab.

also i have a question. there isnt anything to say what ohms to put out. so if i am running it into a 8 ohm cab its just going to bridge it 8 ohms mono.

i just want to make sure im doing this all safely.

QSC does this a little different than Crown and a few others do it. What I would do is instead of rewiring the speakon, is get a 1/4 speaker cord and cut off one of the ends (try a music store for a used one) Then connect the sleeve side to the (-) red terminal and the tip side to the (+) red terminal. Then set your switches.

I would save the speakon cord in case you want to put it back to stereo mode. The 1/4 cables are cheaper then the speakon if you change your mind.

Or you could take the speakon apart and follow the directions above the speakon output. The terminals are labled inside of the plug once you get the blue end off of it.

yea i read all the manual

i was going to just rewire the speakon but i took the blue off and this is what im seeing. i guess its becasue its a cheap cable?

It's hard to do with these kinds of speakon connectors, you have to get the 4 piece type, the one you have is the 2 piece, the 4 piece the blue base unscrews, the it the locking part slides over the actual input to leave with 4 screws exposed and 2 wires showing, then it's as easy as changing the inputs, check the link, this is the kind of 4 piece i'm talking about

You took the strain relief off but you didn't pull the connector apart to get to the terminals.

Plus...that's probably a 2 pole end and you'll need a 4 pole

If you are bridging your QSC, make sure you have enough cabinet to handle it.

If you go 1/4 out of the RBI and 1/4 into the QSC, you can go Speakon to speakon to your cab, or banana to 1/4 if you need.

the settings on the back need to be correct to select the Bridge option. Make sure your low filter is on.

QSC has a great board at their site under support. Bob Lee runs it and is really informative. You also might find your answers by searching that forum.

I will put the links up if you have any trouble finding them. Just kind of out of time right now.......

Hope that is of some help anyway. I never rewired my Speakons, and use a PLX 1602, a RBI and a couple of different cabs. Some I do the Speakon thing, the others I do Banana to 1/4.

PS - Meant to mention......

I burnt up several speakers running bridged, and later learned that I really didn't need that much at one shot.......I work the RBI a little harder up front now, and keep the PLX 1602 around 1/3 to 1/2 on most of the time.....and ease it up of I need it, running one side in stereo mode........the other channel is busy running a PA or sitting idle.

playibanez,

Have you determined yet whether that's a 4-pole or 2-pole Speakon connector that you have partly opened up? ...If this is all too confusing for you have someone like Butch at Bayou Cables make you the proper cable.

naw someone helped me with the cable i honestly didnt even know about the 4 pole =x

im going out to pick one up tommorow, il prob have the tech there rewire it for me, hes a really nice guy.

It was my understanding that a 2 pole plug wouldn't fit in the same jack.

They will. The 2-pole plugs are identical in the mating area save for not having the two extra contact areas.

I think a lot of speakon cables are just 2 wires using the 4 pole plug.

Yep. But not all of them.

i play with lots of mids in my sound should i use the 30 hz?

i think im gunna a-b both filters and see whats up. tommorow cause i wanna be able to crank it a little and its kinda late to start firing this thing up loud.

Mids has nothing to do with the high-pass filter. What cab are you using?

Transporter? XL?

Anyway, its a good idea to try them both (30 and 50 Hz) at moderate but not quiet levels, and inch it up to pretty darn loud listening for speaker stress. The one that exhibits a cleaner and more even sound up and down the neck of the bass is the one you want to be using.

I'll tell you......I didn't use any filter, played in a basement that did not allow formation of good bass sound.......and really drove it trying to hear and feel the bass......

I smoked a JBL and 2 Nice Emi's........

You don't have to max the amp to burn your speakers up.....trust me.

As Ironic as it sounds, or corny......we were playing smoke on the water......and it smelled like paper burning, right before it went up.....also charred the pad for the attenuator.....

The really low signal you filter out, you really can't hear, but it can damage your speaker.

I have about $500 into that lesson, just trying to share.

Tool around in here........before you run anything full throttle.....
