LMII DI - Jumper on Pre/Post EQ?

Hmm that's strange...if I were you I'd go to Radio Shack or something and get a replacement jumper for that. (It would be way less trouble than placing a warranty claim.) I don't know enough about electronice to know if that's the cause of your problem, but it can't be good!
 
That's NOT the jumper location for pre/post setting. It's on the pre-amp board with 'pre' and 'post' printed next to it.

The LMII has a line-level output, not a mic-level output (as far as I know). So it needs te be connected to a balanced line-input on the mixer, or you need to take off about 20 dB from the input. Most mixers have these kind of options and the soundguy should know about them...

Thanks for helping with the location. Next time I see the board, I'll look and see if there is a -20dB switch. It is a small alesis board, with a firewire port for recording, so it didn't have much on it.
 
Ok cool. If you are refering to the Alesis MultiMix boards, they do not have a -20dB switch, but every channel has a mic input (XLR) and a line input (phono/jack plug). I don't know if the latter is balanced, but in your case, it's best to use the line input. It can take much higher input levels. You can get a XLR to jack converter at any electronics/music store. Yeah exactly. Those have the jack line-inputs. Should work fine with the LMII. If you use the mic inputs (XLR), the signal will clip as you mentioned.

Is there any reason why I couldn't come out of say, the "tuner out", with just an instrument cable (1/4" plugs) into that mixer, or do I have to use the DI with the adapater?

Specially over longer distances, you need a balanced signal and possibly the groundlift to get your signal hum-free to the mixer. I suspect hat the DI has a better sound quality to it as well.

One last question. Would it be better if I just bought a simple DI box like a whirlwind IMP or possibly look into getting a good recording DI box? Or should the LMII work just fine as you instructed me?

I'm one who has never had a problem with the LMII DI, set in pre EQ mode. There have been cases of a few indicating an impedance mismatch with certain boards, which can cause the DI to sound thin. Neither I nor anyone I know outside of TB has had this problem. So, not sure if this is 'real' or user error.

However, I guess if running to front of house was a regular thing on most every gig, I'd probably spring for a true, professional quality DI, like the Raidal JDI if you have an active bass, or the Countryman if you have a passive instrument. They are both under $200, and will make any sound person happy.

If I'm just adding a little 'sweetening' to my live bass tone with a little bit of front of house signal, I use the amp. On the big ones, I either use the DI provided or use my JDI in the rare case that a really crappy DI box is provided.

Very, very few professional front of house guys will take a feed directly out of the back on an amp, since the vast majority of DI's in moderate priced amps are just 'so so'.

Edit: And, any sound company that can't handle ANY level of signal coming from any DI by using the PAD control on the board is trouble anyway!

Actually, my problem isn't with live sound. My band is doing a diy-recording thing at our rehearsal place, and the little alesis mixing board/interface doesn't have a PAD control. It only has a gain, volume, and high pass filter switch per channel. The only way to get a clean recorded signal with this little board was to turn the gain and volume almost completely off. This was using the LMII's DI with an xlr cable to the xlr input on the board/interface.

Ah... not sure what to do there. I would find a better board:smug: Even the cheapest Behringer boards have input pads.
 
Are you not happy with the sound of your bass directly into the board? With your active bass, and the tone controls on the board, you should be able to get a nice sound just plugged right into the line level 1/4" input.

I now realize I actually deleted the problem I was having from the original post. When I connected the DI of the LMII to the xlr input on this particular board, there was constant clipping unless I had the the gain and volume controls on the board almost completely off. This is not an issue of tone, only volume. I didn't realize, and have since been instructed in this thread by hitbyablimp, that I needed to buy an xlr-1/4" adapter and run the LMII's DI into the 1/4" line level input on the alesis board instead of the xlr input. If this is all I need to do to get a clean signal at normal gain and volume levels, then I will simply do that. The question I posed above was just asking whether I should use the LMII's DI for recording, or get a seperate DI box.

+1... for short cable runs, that will work fine.
