Flats on a Geddy

Anyone put flats on their Fender Geddy Jazz bass?
I was thinking about it...my producer recommended it for a better THUMP. Anyone have any sound clips or anything???

Ive had Chromes on my GL for about 6 months. I think it fits well with the maple neck. Less click clack. I dont have soundclips though, wish I did. I havent tried other flats w/ the GL , I bought Chromes because I heard they have a brighter tone for flats. Works well with the GL so far.

I put Chromes on mine and it sounds great! The Geddy Lee's are mighty fine
Jazz basses and the Chromes imho just bring out the delicous growl and singing mids that
the Geddy is capable of.

I've tried the Roto 77's actually. Had em on my Schecter a while back. I remember it took some playing to actually "break em in". What are "Chromes"? Is that a brand??? Sorry, I don't know a ton about strings, as I don't change mine very much.

D'Addario Chromes on my GL, too. Nice sounding bass/string combo.

Im thinking about this as well for my Geddy just to see what kind of tone I can get. I got the mid-range growl a' plenty, now I wanted to see if I can get more thump. Ill have to try them.

I'll let you guys know. I'm either going with the Chromes or the Roto's. I'll try and post a sound clip when I get them on - gonna have it professionally set up too...might as well :smug:

stick to lighter lower tension flats on the geddy neck, the geddy I had bought new, i tried to run 45-105 roto flats on it and it bananna'd the neck and sunk the truss rod ansd required washers becuase the neck couldnt take the tension, the geddy necks just dont have enough wood.

I got a set of flatwound Rotos by accident. Maybe I should try them on my geddy...

Should've read this before I went to Guitar Center today and picked up some Roto 77's. Thew them on and something didn't look right as soon as I got her tuned...

The neck bowed like crazy and the A string would't even stay in the nut. Am I screwed here??? :help:

Try the Chromes if u can, they wont mess with the neck on the Geddy. I have the neck as flat as possible with no problems,low action and plays really smooth.

Any suggestions on which # chromes? I was seeing the ECB82's have 105-50. Does the gauge matter as far as fitament?

I went with # ECB81 which are 45-100. I figured that the lower gauge would be friendlier for the GL. IM not sure if the higher gauge would affect the neck or not.

Took the Geddy over to my setup guy. He said it wouldn't be a problem to get the neck straightened out and give her a quick setup with the Roto 77's. Just in time too, cause my band is going in the studio on Friday. I'll let you all know how it goes!

Did you try adjusting the truss rod to compensate? You should tighten it till you get a normal relief.

I didn't wanna break anything, so I just took it to my guy for a setup. I heard these Geddy truss rods can be a hassle.

The neck may settle back down if you take the Rotosounds off right away. I had a similar problem with Rotos -- too much tension for me and I didn't want to mess with the truss rod to compensate.
