Sounclips - SX J Bass pickups

Before I drop in a Bayou Audio Harness w/ 250K pots and a Mallory 150 .047uf cap and Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pickups, I thought I would post some soundclips of the SX J Bass. The only modifications I have done are a Gotoh 201 bridge and a Hipshot string retainer. So besides that, the bass is stock. Oh and the strings areD'Addario XLs.

In the clip all knobs are fully on. The recording signal path was SX J Bass->direct out (pre eq) on Fender Bassman 150->Behringer mixer->Behringer interface->Dell. I didn't use any compression or eq on Audacity so the bass is raw sounding, but I didn't want to mask the sound in any way. Yeah it's late and my groove is awful, song is When You Gonna Learn by Jamiroquai.

It increased clarity and sustain, but the difference wasn't very noticable. Mainly, it is studier and the saddles stay in their places. It was a direct drop in.

Really? I'm a little shocked I thought that sounded awful. Thin, shy bottom, no "umph", just dry and two dimensional. I really hoping for a difference, namely in the character of the pickups and the bottom. Especially after spending $180 and having the return a broken bridge pickup (returned it yesterday). Thanks for you opinion though.

Will the SD's drop right in or will you ahe to fo any PG trimming/routing? - I bought my daughter an SX shortscale P and the stock pups were slightly bigger than The 61 fender replacement I dropped in.
also, were you able to leverage the existing holes when you slapped on the Gotoh?

For a dry sterile signal it was pretty sweet. Would sound great through my Sansamp I bet.

I will probably keep them, but if I really don't hear much difference I will ebay them:crying: And all this time I thought my tone was pretty bad and this was gonna be a tonal nirvana.

It's a tough call with pickups. I've been doing my info gathering on various types, but I'm sure if some people heard my SX with just the Swing 66 strings, they'd say it sounds fine. I can't listen to your sound clip yet, I'll try later tonight and tell you if I notice anything. I have my SX recorded during a jam, so I know what mine sounds like. I visited a bunch of websites and have heard soundclips of different PUs; some really sound cool, others it's barely noticable. I do know what TONE I want, just don't know if it's feasible with my SX and rig.

I'm only looking at a bridge replacement now because playing open strings sounds lousy with the current bridge. I got an OLP MM recently with a massive bridge, and the open strings sound way better.

I'm leaning towards a Badass II bridge right now.
