Hey guys, as some of you know I am beta testing fellow TB'er Paul Tidwell's LoPhat cabinets - specifically his 2x10 cab. So everyone knows, I have not been paid by Paul to use his cabs nor have I been offered a cab at a reduced rate. I was asked to test one in a gig situation and accepted.
Well, yesterday I played a gig with the cab at the Sagebrush Cantina. We played on the outdoor stage to a crowd of about 300. I was running the cab with my Warwick 5.2 head which is 500w @ 4 ohms. My bass of choice yesterday was a 1976 Gibson T-Bird. Paul's 2x10 500w @ 4 ohm cab so I was able to run the cab with full power.
The cab sounded great. I was going up against a hard hitting drummer, 2 guitarists with Divided by Thirteen and Marshall rigs, & keyboards. Well, the cab took them all on and performed beautifully. Wonderful thick tone all night...this cab is the real deal.
The one thing that I notice the most with Paul's cabinet is even with the neo speakers, there is no midrange honk that is so prevalent with other neo cabs that I have owned. I have actually wanted to move away from the neo's because of the forced mid's, but the LoPhat does not have that at all. The construction is solid with heavy duty handles on the sides and solid hard plastic corners. The cab feels like it's in the low 40lb range and is easy to handle. The actual box is bigger than most 2x10's on the market - that could explain the lack of extra mid's but I'll let Paul speak to that specific feature.
All in all, it's a great box with a huge sound, portable and built well. I am not sure of the pricing when the cabs hit the market but I know that I'll be one of the first to actually purchase one.
We had some video shot last night as well as a mix from the board. Once I get the media I'll add to the post. I know that Paul aslo recorded the second set and took some photos...maybe he'll post them here later.
Thansk!
