Jake and Bob were in town for the FolkLife festival, which is more or less in my neighborhood, so it started small and turned into a bass-love-fest at my place this afternoon. Had a great time meeting everyone and going from bass to bass and bow to bow. Thanks to everyone for coming and making such a nice Sunday for us.

In the photo, left to right (your left, not ours):

Dwight, Al, Bob, Nancy (With the Laughing Face) {below}, Troy, Maiken, John and Jake.

The low end was shaking the windows and I won the raffle!

Also good to finally meet 'Droolin' Del the Drummer Boy' (looks just like his dad right now) and the impressively bilingual Nancy with the Laughing Face.

Wow. So many bass players. Was there a depression in the space time continuum? Be careful. Too many and Earth will be pulled too close to the event horizon of the nearest black hole. I can see the headline now "The Demise of Reality Caused by Cello Summit in the Pacific Northwest"

Looks like hella fun!

I found it really interesting being able to try the two carbon fiber and one wood end pin in Maiken's bass. On some level I realized the effect that an end pin could have on the tone of a bass, but on another I've always thought of it as the silly peg that adjusts the height.
It was also great hearing someone with some bonafide arco chops bow my bass... thanks Al.

It was really nice to finally play a New Standard Cleveland, especially back to back with a real American Standard, and with an Epiphone and 2 Kays in the room! Classic American plywood was well represented.

Al's old French/German has gorgeous varnish and a really deep swelled back!
The arco sounds from it and from Troy's 'Ilsa' as played by Al were especially sweet but all the basses sounded great under the bow. Bob's basses with their Gamut guts had an almost baroque thing happening and the Dominants, Spiro Mittels and Weichs held their own sound-wise with the Belcantos.

Two basses with Weichs, one with Mittels, one with Dominants, one with three Belcantos and a Mittel E, and two with Gamuts over Animas. Hmmm

I only wish we had a photo of the pile of bass bags on the porch! :)
