The things I wanted to know about the Line 6 M13 thread - Now with Soundclips

OK so I was just going to send Rich the Product Manager of this a PM then I though nah everyone else might as well get to read it, maybe they can chime in.

So here goes.

Does it have an octaver?

If not, why not and could this be added later?

How accurate is the tuner? 1 cent?

Are all the fx blendable with clean sound?

Is this blend adjustable with an expression pedal?

Do any of the delay oscilate?

Do they pitch shift when you adjust the time while it's repeating? Or is it glitchy like most digital delays?

I saw there was a global noise gate, but are there any patch adjustable gates for the dirt?

Do any of the outputs work as a headphone out?

I know you can choose chain placement of the fx loop, but can you put left fx loop one place and right fx loop another place?

Is it possible to use the stereo outs to A/B on amps?

I saw it collapses the signal to mono with just dirt and stuff but does it do dual mono? As in comes out of both output but with no stereo spread?

Can the dry thru models on the delay be used as just a coloured signal with no delay fx?

Can the order of fx be changed so it's not just dist - mod - filter - delay?

Is it possible to use the midi out to control say a synth ala Geddy Lee of Rush, using the 12 stomps to trigger the notes of a keyboard?

Will this unit work at line level in fx loops?

I think that will do me for now, I know some of this is in the advance manual, but I'm fairly certain it's not in the normal one and some of this has got to make people go ***

How much research have you done? Has Line 6 really left that much up in the air?....way to think about your customers. A lot of what you are asking seems like pretty rudimentary stuff, to which I don't know any of the answers.

The one of your questions that I know I can answer is you can run any of the effects in any of the 4 positions at any time. You can go delay, dirt, delay, dirt if it suits your fancy. Or you can run 4 TS9 models one into the other if you think that will be a good Idea.

I think there is an octaver, but it is an octave synth that you have to dial the synth out of (check to verify this, though).

It is a really bitchin' unit, but too expensive and too big for the stuff I wanted to use it for (more too expensive than too big, if it was $200 I would have picked it up a long time ago).

Does it have an octaver?
Sub Octave Fuzz, Octave Fuzz have drive controls on them. Three synths (Growler, Synth, Attack) have two octave ranges.

If not, why not and could this be added later?

How accurate is the tuner? 1 cent?
No info in manual.

Are all the fx blendable with clean sound?
No info in manual.

Is this blend adjustable with an expression pedal?

Do any of the delay oscilate?
"Oscillate" not found in manual.

Do they pitch shift when you adjust the time while it's repeating? Or is it glitchy like most digital delays?
Couldn't really figure out how to find this in the manual.

I saw there was a global noise gate, but are there any patch adjustable gates for the dirt?
There's a noise gate as a distortion model, but I'm not sure that's what you're looking for. You're asking about noise gate on each distortion, right? I know you can use that modeler in any of the units.

Do any of the outputs work as a headphone out?
Not found in manual.

[/QUOTE]

That's as far as I can get right now. Must. prepare. for. meeting.

Does it have an octaver?
Like someone else said, there is a filter model that can be tweaked to get a useable octaver. There is no single octaver model on the unit.

If not, why not and could this be added later?
Not sure why, but there has been talk on the M13 forums of possible package updates in the future that would allow you to add models to the unit.

How accurate is the tuner? 1 cent?
Not sure of the specifics, but I'd say it worked as well as my Korg DTR-1000.

Are all the fx blendable with clean sound?
No, not all fx have a blend control. The distortion setting don't have them, but they all have bass and treble controls, which in my mind makes up for it, in a way. Alot of the rest of the fx do have blend controls.

Is this blend adjustable with an expression pedal?
Any parameter in the fx model can be adjusted using the pedal, so if there is a blend, yes it can be adjusted.

Do any of the delay oscilate?
Not sure.

Do they pitch shift when you adjust the time while it's repeating? Or is it glitchy like most digital delays?
Again, not sure.

I saw there was a global noise gate, but are there any patch adjustable gates for the dirt?
There is a noise gate model in the distortion section, which can be placed anywhere in the signal chain.

Do any of the outputs work as a headphone out?
Haven't tried this, so i can't say for sure.

I know you can choose chain placement of the fx loop, but can you put left fx loop one place and right fx loop another place?
I think this was discussed on the M13 forums, and I believe it can be done, but don't take my word for it...

Is it possible to use the stereo outs to A/B on amps?
Not sure.

I saw it collapses the signal to mono with just dirt and stuff but does it do dual mono? As in comes out of both output but with no stereo spread?
Not sure.

Can the dry thru models on the delay be used as just a coloured signal with no delay fx?
You should be able to dial the blend down on these models to do whatever you want with it.

Can the order of fx be changed so it's not just dist - mod - filter - delay?
There is no set order for what effect goes where. There are 12 pedals on a board at any time, and any of the 12 can be whatever you want them to be. It's really like having physical pedals and being able to move them around to get a signal chain you like.

Is it possible to use the midi out to control say a synth ala Geddy Lee of Rush, using the 12 stomps to trigger the notes of a keyboard?
Not sure.

Will this unit work at line level in fx loops?

Not sure.

I'm simply someone who uses the M13, so I am clearly no expert. Hopefully this helps in some way though.

Sorry maybe I wasn't clear when I talked about the gate I don't want something to cut hiss out I want hard gated fuzz settings.

But nice to know my questions aren't that easily available.

Also personally bass and treble controls do not make up for lack of a blend on the distortions you can't boost what has already been removed, also blended drives sound completely different to none blended ones for me it's not just about adding bass in. It's more about making a huge sound with both fuzz and clean bass ;)

I figured that's what it was about. The way I've been using it, the bass and treble control worked fine. Now, I'm experimenting with running two amps, one clean, one dirty/ effected and seeing if it's worth the trouble. Right now I'm running into a bit of buzzing from the ground/ lift, but it sounds pretty good.

Not to hi-jack, but have you guys who use it find the effects clean?
Or does it color the sound of the bass when bypassed?

I've looked at it and thought many times of trying it out. Just seemed to "Guitar" for me.

Does it have an octaver?
Like someone else said, there is a filter model that can be tweaked to get a useable octaver. There is no single octaver model on the unit.
I tried this and didn't think it was usable. Lack of an octaver was a deal breaker for me on this unit.
If not, why not and could this be added later?

Yeah, if a good octaver becomes available I'll definitely buy one.

I agree with Dave on this, I've not tried the octaver on this so I can't comment on if I'll like it but to only have one that is always quite gritty is very limiting.

Sure I can stick one in the fx loop and I can run a strobostomp if the tuner isn't all that accurate, and then I can run xyz pedals to make up for this that and the other, do we see the slippery slope here?

I'm looking at the M13 so I don't have to keep rebuilding pedal boards of auditions, sessions, recording etc.

Been thinking about the looper :D

Is it possible to move it's place in a chain while actively looping? ie. I loop something with distortion and verb and then during play back I want to add verb after it?

Can I switch scenes during playback with no interuption?

And non looper related, would it be possible to use some sot of midi control surface to adjust parameter's/knobs on pedal? Basically I'm thinking of having a midi control surface at waist height and I can make fx squeal and go crazy as I've done for years. I'm not a fan of bending down :bassist:

Yeah, but you have to like the effects in the first place. I had one for a few days and returned it. It was cool, I really liked the looper, but I found that for bass I only liked a handful of effects. And the lack of an octaver was annoying.

It seems like the holy grail, and for guitarists, I think it is. But for bassists, the effects aren't fine tuned for the lowend. (IMHO, of course.)

Hopefully I understand your question and can answer it correctly. With the looper, you can use whatever effects you want either pre or post loop. So, you can throw on a dirt and verb, record a part, then while that plays back, switch to a filter and delay, record another pass, and so on. Then, if you want to add something to all the loops, turn on whatever effect you want, switch from pre to post, and there you have it.

As far as I know, you can do this. I know for sure you can switch effects, and scenes are easily switched as well. I may try this myself to find out.

I agree but I like the DL-4, Echopark, Verbzilla and the FM4, not enough over single fx to justify the large size and stupid power requirements.

But these days I could really do with a multi and I doubt the Zoom or Boss will ever cut it.

I don't need the effects to be better than all the boutique fx I would normally consider for example I just need the chorus to be as good as the Danelectro 18v Cool Cat which is what I would buy if I needed Chorus for 1 song in a set.
