Bass v.s. guitar: The tale of Victor Wooten

While Regi is a sick player, he really should switch one of those pups to a humbucker or something to thicken up his tone. Especially live, a lot of his notes just get lost in the noise.

That is a really fun video though. If you get a chance to see the Victor Wooten Band, you really should go. It's a lot of fun.

I saw Victor in ATL about three years ago. It was by far the most boring show I've ever seen. I really felt like I was at some kind of dog and pony show. There were set ups for all his licks, like special lighting, and they were really drawing attention to it, making sure you knew what he was doing, almost stopping the show everytime he was gonna pull out some crazy chops. On top of that the music was bbbbaaaaaadddddd.... It was like a mix of 80's r&b/inspirational rap. It was weird. After about the first twenty minutes the show got bad. The first twenty was awesome songs and everybody playing there butts off. After that it just seemed like play time. It was a two hour show and I left about 50 minutes in. It was that bad.

I was really bummed too. Vic hardly played bass during the show. I think he was actually more worried about making sure we knew that his entire family played some kind of instrument. I was hyped on him at the time and I took my wife and a good buddy and they were bored to tears. I had never seen or heard a bad show at the Variety Play House, but that night it happened. Saw Adam Nitti two weeks later and felt a lot better.

Wow.. Im shocked. I didnt experience any of this at his show in Cleveland last summer. He introduced the band, but played the bass almost nonstop. He even took a 10 or 15 minute solo, no drums or anything.

I met victor wooten today... strangely enough.

I had a gig downtown, so I went down got there a bit early.

so I decided to hit up the local guitar shop. I go in and am looking around the bass section and there seems to be alot of people milling about the bass section. so I look closer and there is victor wooten sitting there talking and signing autographs.

I did a triple take and said hi.

apparently he is in town playign tonight for some jazzfest.

Rush was awesome, freakin amazing. But a show of about 60 people in a tiny room with Victor... man, it smelled sooo funkay in there! ;)

Well I love funk... Ya know brothers johnson, Larry Graham, Dumpstafunk (I think thats the spelling), Flea (yes he has some Bada$$ funk licks), Wild Cherry, Marlowe DK (youtube bassist), bootsy and others

I love funk with a passion, ^ and those are some of my favorite bands but Rush is LEGENDARY!!! I hope to see em before the retire, and plus I don't really like Vic to begin with:)

Yeah man I was totally shocked too. Haha. Anthony Wellington played bass the whole night. But Vic actually had his slung behind his back for about two songs in a row so he could clap and sing. I'm telling you..... it was weird. Prolly the funniest thing was that his rig was on a drum riser. And when the show stared they announced his name, and all of a sudden he pops up on top of these 8x10 cabs and started the show off dancing. Like if there was a trampoline behind the riser and cabs, and he jumped from the trampoline on top of the cabs. So all you saw was him pop up there real theatrical like. And some people dressed in what looked like indian clothes came out beating drums and dancing with him. The whole show had that element of showy-ness to it. :o
