What do you do with your basses at night?

just that...

we've learned alot about each other here, concerning the amps, basses, and even racks and gear we use in them. something that's had me wondering lately is what exactly other folks do with their basses for the night.

does your bass sleep well in it's case, hang on a wall or just lean up against your amp, waiting for you to wake up? do you sleep with your bass? does your bass lean against your front door to provide an awakening *ClAnG!!* in the event of an intruder?

We have young kids at home. My basses & guitars sleep in thier cases. The band practices at my house, & the little ones were infatuated with all the gear for awhile, but have gotten used to it, & leave it alone. But they seem drawn to any bass or guitar that I take out, so when I'm done, back in the case it goes...

...nothing worse than the sight of a neck-thru bass, laying on a concrete floor, with a broken headstock. I shudder just to think of the possibility...

My Warwick, being older and more mature, prefers to sleep in a hard case. My Yamaha, a bit younger and up for a party anytime, likes to wait patiently in its stand until I decide to play. I have a double bass, a wise old man of the forest, who tends to sit in the corner, cloaked and mysterious. These three reside in a spare bedroom, where they have access to effects, amps, guitars, a couple of trombones and a comfy bed if they decide to retire to some luxury - I await the morning when I catch them snuggled in bed, hung over and possibly fretless.

My basement's unfinished and I noticed that when I'd leave any of my basses on the stand (always covered with a bed sheet) for several days, they'd sound and play like crap.

I was lucky enough to find 2 barely used cases for cheap and, since putting my basses away every night, they play and sound consistently good all the time. Plus I get a lot of dust on the cement floor, so I cover my amps with bed sheets and the basses always go in the cases, which are also covered.

But I'm in the process of getting my basement finished this winter so the dust issue won't be such a big thing. But I'll still put the basses away in their cases.

My P-Bass (going through those 'terrible two's') will occasionally slide into bed between my wife and I sometime in the wee morning hours. I don't know what to do about it...
