The 90's: Any funk, real bass ??

A lot of the stuff from the "Acid Jazz" scene of the nineties was funk-based and included live bass. Check out the Brand New Heavies albums "Brother Sister" and their eponymous debut. Do a search for "acid jazz" on TB and you'll find a thread that has some suggestions. You should also check out Me'shell Ndegéocello's first two albums, "Plantation Lullabies" and "Peace Beyond Passion". + 1 on the Jamiroquai, though I would point to the first album and tracks such as "Blow Your Mind", "When You Gonna Learn" and "Too Young To Die". Also check out a label called Big Cheese Records for some funky nineties stuff (much of it from France).

Hi,
I thought I'd get some suggestions for any funky type or R&B songs from....the 90's.

I'm having trouble aside from some RHCP stuff,....

Anyone think of any off-hand?

Thanks!

To be honest, funk (at least traditional funk) was DEAD in the '90's. Bands that were funky were funk rock, funk core, or hip hop funk.

That being said, the '90's were a good time for funk progression. Primus, 311, No Doubt, Living Colour, Fishbone, Infectious Grooves, Rage Against The Machine, Incubus, The Roots, Jamiroquai, and Prince were all bringing the funk during the decade. All these bands, though, were not merely funk bands, and you had to dig deep in their catalogs to find a straight-up funk song that wasn't interlaced with other music styles.

Even Michael Jackson was throwing down some.

Also, this was the time that hip hop was dropping old school funk beats and samples...Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Outkast were all dabbling in funk and bringing it back to the forefront.
