I need your opinions. Did I just find a 1966 Fender P-bass?
My young cousin Blake Carr is a fine bassist, and currently in the bass chair for New York Indie band XYLOFAUX ( Link Removed ). On my latest return to my old home place in New York (W.110th St and B'way), Blake loaned me his "1972 P-bass."
Once I opened the case, and saw the mid-sixties "Non-TV" logo, the serial number, the C width neck, and the heavily checked Nitro, I was really excited. Instead of a later CBS-era instrument, this might really be one of those nice P-basses that came from Fender in '65 and '66 shortly after the CBS acquisition, and before the nitro finishes ended and also before the noticeably lower quality (IMHO) that crept in later.
This "'72 P-bass" needed a little attention. After a new set of LaBella Flats and a few other tweaks, here is the evidence I found.
The decal, note headstock nitro checking:
Bridge and body finish checking:
The tuners and hootenanny button:
1966 serial number and body finish nitro checking:
Neck heel date and C neck label:
Anyone have comments or helpful observations?
