Help me find the right bass. I need suggestions..

Hi. Today I played quite a few different basses at my local GC. I tend to like the Schecters, but I played an American made Fender Jazz Bass, and I loved the feel of it, and the way it sounded for some of the music I play. I really love to play progressive metal, but I play some softer, more jazzy-type stuff as well. I'm looking into 5 strings, and I'll have the funds to buy one this summer. So, here's my question: What's a good, versatile bass that can play great sounding jazzy-type music, but also have that kind of metal sound that a Schecter has? Also, I'd like one that has more of the Schecter look, but the sound is more important to me. I really liked the feel of the Jazz bass, and one that would feel like that but be versatile would be great. I know that's a tall order, but a steer in the right general direction is what I'm looking for. Not perfection.
Any ideas?

Yes...I do have one myself, but this is not just a "buy what I got" answer.

Warwick is a very popular bass among the metallurgists and it's very versatile for a myriad other sounds.

I was thinking this. I played with a Warwick 4 string, but they didn't have any 5 strings. I liked. I'm kind of undecided about how I felt about the 4 string. The only amp available there was a smaller one, and I couldn't hear it too well, and I forgot to try it out again when the people using the other one's left. Heh. I'll check it out again, for sure.

I just checked that out on GC's website and that's a $1,900 bass... I'd love to be able to afford that, but I'm thinking around $1,000.

It appears that no one around here has any taste in bass guitars. My local CL is filled with horrible basses. Haha. One "Collage" bass is the only 5 string on there, really. There's a Schecter Stiletto Elite 5 on Ebay that I love how it looks, and from my experience with my Schecter Extreme 4, it might be one I'd love, but I don't know much about it and I don't know anyone that has one. It's only around $750 on there.

with all that being said I learned along time ago afterbuying bass after bass that its the amp that has the sound or sounds..

I played the Fender Jazz bass out of a large Ampeg and a Markbass. I do not like any of the Markbass amps I've played with at all. The Ampeg sounded really nice with it, but again it sounded amazing for jazzy-type stuff, but it sounded not good for the metal-type stuff I tried. I agree that the amp has a lot to do with it, but I still don't think that bass could've gotten the sound I liked. I spent a good few hours there and tried different combinations, and still haven't found what I'm looking for. I'll check out the Musicmans, but ( please don't hate me for this) I hate the way they look. I have yet to play one. They have a sale going on right now, and I didn't see any there today.
