Is this Fender original?

Hi everybody,

I'm interestedin buying a Fender Jazz 75 reissue. I met a guy who is selling this bass , he says it is a 75 reissue. It looks like one, but the neckplate takes 4 screws and it is square, not triangular. Is it possible Fender made some reissues like this or is it a fake?

The truss rod adjustment hole looks wrong too, it doesn't have the protruding chrome nut. Decal is wrong and placed wrong. It has the same crappy-looking body wood my Squier VM Precision has.

It probably says "Crafted in Indonesia" on the back of the headstock.

Nope! It sure ain't. It might be a 'Fender product', and if it is, it left some overseas factory contracted with Fender, sporting the Squier label on the headstock originally. I'd be very, very, surprised if it was one of the odd ball variations on a vintage theme that Fender of Japan produces for it's domestic market, and found it's way over to wherever you are. I know they made a MIJ/CIJ 75 J-Bass reissue, but those were close in spec to the MIA version.

While that neck looks to be straight off of a VM J bass, that body looks like a mis-match. I held one in my hands yesterday afternoon, and it is made of 4 pieces of wood glued together in strips going in the direction of neck to bridge. This body looks to be of better quality. Also the tinting is not a match between the two as they are on either the Squier or on the fender.

See how the tint is pretty close on these squires? Tell him $300 and you will be a happy man, but never try to sell it as a fender. Cheers.

Going by my VM Jazz - On mine, The body is a symmetrically joined two-piece body with very close grain matching, and the tint on the body is noticeably darker than the neck, which has NO tinting whatsoever. The disparity in the body versus neck shading looks just about right for a Squier VM Jazz. I'd say it's totally a Squier VM, with the only obvious changes the knobs and either the pickups or the pickup covers (no Duncan designed logos).

The one dead giveaway that it's a fake and not a 75 reissue, besides other obvious differences that have been pointed out, is that Fender uses the 76-82 modified smaller model name, serial number under the Fender brand, script style logo for it's so called 75 J-Bass reissues. Fender used the larger script logo from about 69 and on through 1975 on J-Basses made during those years. If you don't believe me, you can check page 65 of the book ' The Fender Bass, An Illustrated History', for a look at an actual 75 J-Bass. The bass in question, posted by the OP, is displaying a poor counterfeit of the large script earlier 70's logo. As for the 75 reissues of the J-Bass they should have been called 76 reissues instead, to be a little bit more accurate, but Fender marketing probably thought 75 was close enough. I thought I'd pass this I.D. pointer on. Whoever slapped that logo on, might have checked out some Fender history, but got one glaring detail, among others, regarding the 75 reissues wrong.

Same as mine. Mine also had a bit of flame to it as well, not as much as the OP's pic, but similar. It was also the exact same color.
