I'm not an electrical engineer, nor do I know much about the specifics of the drivers EA chose for this, but perhaps the unusual rating is partly due to the cab's uncommon arrangement of drivers — in addition to the 10" main woofer/mid/tweeter out front, there's also an internal secondary woofer that drives into the transmission line.

I know the EA folks were serious about the science of their work, so it's also possible that they were being pedantic about matching the rated impedance on the label as closely as possible to the real impedance of the system.

I have had no issues running this cabinet with heads rated for a nominal 4ohm minimum impedance.

Thank you. I know EA stuff is highly reputable but I just don't remember ever seeing a 5 ohm cabinet before. A second driver would help explain it.

This must be loud for it's size, and pretty efficient. How much does this weigh? What are the dimensions? Thanks!

The cabinet's weight is in the neighborhood of 35lb. It measures about 21"x16"x15".

I have a pair of VL-110s that i absolutely love. Are you able to comment on the difference between yours and mine?

I haven't played through the VL-110 myself before, but I do know that the VL-110 is a little smaller, around the same weight, uses a different woofer design, and employs a larger mid driver. The VL-110 does not use an internal driver like the IL-110 (as far as I know). Both cabinets have similar wide-ranging mid and tweeter controls, as you can see.

I believe VL-110 cabinets are rated 250W at 8ohm; the IL-110 here is rated to handle 400W at 5 ohm (though I don't have sensitivity specs on hand, sorry).

I also frequently use an EA Wizzy 12 M-Line, and I can say that the IL-110 and Wizzy clearly target the same sonic character. I think of them as two slightly different flavors of the same faithful reproduction of my instruments' sounds — the IL-110 is perhaps the more flexible cabinet due to the adjustable mids and tweeter, and it can be made to sound quite a bit like the Wizzy. The Wizzy is possibly a little easier to cart around, but I do find myself fond of having two opposite handles on the IL-110 compared to the Wizzy's single side-mounted handle.

Thanks for your reply. I found this article that's talks about these cabs too. Pretty much says what you said, but it's an interesting read. Sounds like they made very few of these - ya got yourself a unicorn there!

Shame that they don't make apartments in New York City big enough for unicorns! It's a wonderful cabinet, but I'd rather see it off to someone who will actually play it like it was meant to be played.
