Fane Sovereign Pro 12-500

I ordered one of these from Thomann USA, $175 delivered. It's a beast.

I'm going to build a 1.8 cu-ft enclosure for it identical to the one I made for the Eminence KL3012CX-8 in Post #347 of this thread.

The T/S parameters match quite well and I think they will play nicely together.

Here is a back shot of the baffle with driver and port shelves in position. Measuring, cutting, and gluing of all the bracing for sides and back is next.

This is similar to your recommendation for the referenced KL3012CX-8 build. Using my current design as the base case, I ran cases for minimum dampening with the same port and typical dampening with 1" shorter port. After seeing the delta on these two comparison cases, I did another typical dampening case with 0.75" shorter port. The amount of dampening has an impact but the typical case agrees with the measured Fb after construction.

Shortening the port raises Fb, F10, Fxmax, and Pdip with smaller effects on F3 and normalized response at 100 Hz. I'm all for increasing that upper bass response between 50-100 Hz but at some point, the tradeoff in loss of low end extension doesn't seem worth it. I like a solid low B that won't fart out at higher volume with reasonable EQ settings. My D800+ has a HPF to manage that but my Ashdown ABM EVO 600 watt head doesn't. Most of the power in a note is split between the fundamental and first harmonic and only becomes a risk in loud transients, so perhaps it's not an issue. I just have a problem with an F10 above 45 Hz for a 12" bass cab.

I'm sure it would but this driver looks to have a good extended treble response with enough upper mid presence to be sufficient on its own. I'd like to keep this one simple. It will be used primarily for practice or in a smaller jam space with friends. If used live, it will have the matching KL3012CX-8 cab on top with a coaxial HF driver. Here is the off-axis plot for the stack.

For comparison, here is an identical plot for my Faital 15PR400 cab with M5N8-80 mid driver high passed at 1460 Hz. This Faital is an excellent sounding cab with no noticeable beaming issues when played out live.

That looks great! Smoother response with about 3db added SPL 70-200 Hz range. Should be meaty. How are the highs/mids texture wise on the coax vs. mid driver?

I think you are giving up a lot of real world performance.

Set L=0 on the driver parameter and you will see what I mean. It becomes more clear when you remove an unnecessary variable for LF examination.
 
That's an interesting approach and makes sense since the driver inductance doesn't affect its low frequency response. The resulting one-sided normalized response curve makes it easier to see the damping. I can see how the 55.5 Hz for this driver is -0.4dB at 100 Hz which looks overdamped. Shortening the port to achieve a flat response (0 dB) at 100 Hz is better and reduces the 78 Hz power dip about +1 dB (79 watts). I'd think this would improve transient response and add a bit more meat to the upper bass. I'll shorten the ports by about an inch and give this a try.

Shorten it by another inch and try it again

I ran the model with the port another inch shorter (2.75") and the response became slightly underdamped (+0.5 dB at 100 Hz). There was also no power dip but the dropoff knee also shifted upward and low end extension was further reduced with the cone reaching Xmax at 50 Hz with a 400 watt signal. I see the trend here and at some point it becomes the designer's choice on where to fix it. I like the response improvement at 1" shorter and the way it still matches up with the KL3012CX cab which I'd like to stack it with so that's where I'm going to leave it.

I decided to make a tiltback kit from a short piece of 3" PVC pipe and some plywood scraps by cutting a 3-1/2" hole in a 4-1/4" square of 3/4" ply, then cutting it in half to make mounting feet for the PVC pipe. A pair of 13-1/2" lengths of 1-1/4" wide, 1/2" plywood strips with rubber cabinet feet screwed to either end provide a means for an amp to rest securely on the inclined cabinet without sliding off.

The pipe as mounted provides a 4" elevation for the front edge of a cab and worked pretty well for this practice setup.

I like the voicing of this driver so far. The bass is full and tight with pretty good treble extension and doesn't sound dark. It reminds me a bit of the Beyma 12WR400 but has more meat in the upper bass/low mid area.

I ran an impedance scan with my DATS V3 test system and found Fb=56.2 Hz. I then took an RTA snapshot from my phone with pink noise to see the frequency response in the room. This isn't a lab quality measurement but shows the frequency response pretty good to about 4kHz. It's also solid down to low B and can handle quite a bit of power with no sign of distress. I look forward to stacking this with the KL3012CX cab.
