    Trying to get that Journey bass sound

    BASS brothers & sisters, I have an effects question: I’m trying to get that bass sound Journey has. Whether it was Ross or Randy, the bass sound is consistent. Listen to “Who’s crying now” or "I'll Be Alright Without You", I hear some Chorus but what’s giving it that tight growl?

    I've tried messing with many different settings to try and get the distortion to stop, none have worked.

    My Hartke KB12 is distorting bad on low notes, fine on mids and highs. Trying to do a little triage before I take it to a repair shop. Does this sound like a blown speaker? Seems to me if it was an electronics issue it would distort across the sound spectrum. Thoughts?

    I guess you could be right, every JRetro for Jazz I’ve seen has two flip switches, not one. But it’s possible.

    Not looking to reinvent the wheel, surely there's a bass preamp pedal on the market that's similar to the J-Reto on-boards.

    I've got John East's J Retro preamp's on my Fender J-Bass and my Lakland DJ4 and love them. I've got two other Fenders that don't have on-board preamps, I'd like to find a pedal that performs as nicely as the J Retro's do. Any suggestions?
