If you haven't tried them yet, you might consider using La Bella tapewounds (either white or black. I prefer black for their warmer tone). They're much warmer than rounds, but clearer/brighter than flats. Frankly, they're the only strings I'll use.

As others have said - the Mesa TT-800 is what I'd get with that budget! (And hope to get before too long) Also, don't be turned off by the number of knobs and switches - its got two channels so only half the number of knobs as it looks like, and the manual is fantastic!

@lucas303 It's definitely possible to do, but at a minimum it takes a new nut and a new bridge. I ended up not liking how mine turned out (the neck was a lot wider than was comfortable), so I stripped it for parts after doing the modifications, but it was a fun project!

For a string slightly brighter than flats, I can't recommend LaBella black nylon tapewounds enough!! They're the smoothest feeling string you'll ever play, and they have a really warm sound but with more clarity than flats. They're the only strings I use.
