    I like Michael Manring's and Victor Wooten's solo playing. But, a little goes a long way. I agree with what's been said by others that the composition matters the most with individual instruments playing their appropriate role, be it virtuosity or simple.

    If you haven't played a fretless before, please play one for awhile before you buy one. Fretless is more difficult than fretted to play. Out of tune is a common phenomenon with fretless and even if the sound is great, out of tune playing ruins it all. For metal I would think that a Warwick Thumb...

    A little eq boost in the mid-range and some compression, both done at the mixing stage would be one way of helping the issue.

    I agree with the above statements about the material of the fingerboard making a difference, in addition to technique, strings etc. Epoxy or graphite fingerboards generally have more mwah in my experience.
