I like 20...also have a drop D tuner which changes things up just enough to get a bit lower than the normal E string. Had multiple 5 strings some 3 octave...never went above the 12th fret...doing some Beach Boys stuff that requires 16th fret, feels natural on a 4 string Jazz. Just my two cents...

I’d say you defined my problem exactly. I play a jazz bass now that I love. Done the p, various 5 strings, etc. I did notice that if I moved closer to the nut on the ric I could get a bit more comfortable. Seeing as they are my buddies ric’s, I can’t make changes to them.

Just tighten up the G a little more when you restring it...

Ric’s definitely have their sound. Have a buddy who loves them, has multiple and always begs me to play them. I have tried many times to find a comfortable spot/hand position but just can’t seem to. It’s one bass that just doesn’t fit.

I bought a schecter 5 string 20 years ago when I wanted to learn the five. The quality, construction, sound, finish was amazing. Absolutely great bass. It took me a while to appreciate everything it was. I got an MTD 5 fretless, a TBC 5 short scale, and that schecter kicked their ass. Gone back...
