I've heard this claim and I think it applies to the first ever Squier Japan series - JV. I don't know whether or not it is the same case with the SQ series, however, using surplus parts from one series in the next one was a pretty common practice in the Japanese factories at that time, so maybe?

If you're referring to the dot on the neck plate it is the reflection of a lighting fixture on my ceiling

Can't be 100% sure but from my research it looks like SQ Series basses with black bodies were Alder as opposed to the 3TSB finish that was Sent (Japanese Ash)
