No you are thinking of '' scale over this chord'' or ''notes of the scale'' learn how chords are built off each degree of the scale.. getting a grounding with chordal theory will help you hear and identify that you are playing the notes with in the chord for your target notes that form good...

yes, I do suspect the trumpet player was referring to your note placement and attempting to diplomatically express this to you......sometimes playing under the gun in live situations can give the player instant feedback on what does not work----keep going with an open mind and work on good...

I would also add that bass guitar is another type of fingering pattern than guitar-- your primary fingers used should be 124. using that and the thumb pivot will help your tone and produce a much better comfort level.... Steve stevebryantbassguitar.com

I've owned this book since the 70's and it is a classic text...yes appropriate for electric bass too--excellent as it covers chords and foundational studies -- be sure to use 124 fingering on electric bass -- this keeps the hand balanced and will prevent you from getting and problems with...

The Electric Bass is a different animal than guitar...different fingering and technique..I would recommend a bass teacher with a proven history of teaching pro or semi-pro players..and be sure they teach good music content and not just licks....if you learn music principles you will be well...
