Definitely more rare. Very nice basses! I found this video in which you can hear the difference: The Italian (JP Modern) one has more definition I think, and the Gloxy is much darker and low-mid heavy.

I was worried by your remark that I'd missed something being obviously of low quality. Time will tell how durable the components are, but ATM it all seems sturdy and fine. The plastic knobs are very cheap (and replaced ;)), the bridge is simple but functional, Basswood is not the most expensive...
