Double Bass Playing Acoustic vs. Amplified

Thanks Sam. I figured that it all really depends on who I'm playing with. I recently played with a group that had such good dynamics you could talk over us playing. As far as my technique goes I think it's pretty decent. I've had lessons on and off (mainly classical and a handful of jazz) for...

Double Bass Playing Acoustic vs. Amplified

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I was wondering what measures one must take when playing acoustic as opposed to amplified. I recently took upright up after getting tendinitis a few years back and I come from a mainly BG background. Any advice?

    Does being a bassist suck

+1. This guy has the right idea. You should be happy man. Critical listening is one of the most important things a musician can do, and is a pretty big milestone. I wish half the people I play with listened critically to anything.

    Jazz artists

Wayne Shorter is great. His new quartet is pretty wild too. You also can't go wrong with Roy Hargrove as far as contemporary stuff.

    Jazz Improvisation

Hey man, I know how you feel. It's pretty tough to get into the jazz improv zone. It's not easy. I would start by arpeggiating chords in time through whatever tune you're working on. Start in root position, then 1st inversion, 2nd, etc. That'll give you a good handle on the changes. Once you...

    Same String Keeps Rusting

The entire string is rusted excepts for a small area past the nut. It's a wishbass, so the bridge is made out of corian. It can't be the tuner, because the only part of the string that isn't rusted is the part right at the tuner. I'll get some pictures up either tonight or tomorrow morning.

    Same String Keeps Rusting

    Same String Keeps Rusting

So I replaced the strings on my fretless bass with D'Addario halfrounds a month ago, and about a week or two later I noticed that the D string was seriously rusted. At first I thought that I just forgot to change the D string, but I changed the strings again with a new set of halfrounds...

One Bass Only: A short treatise

It's a good idea to have one other bass as a backup. Before I bought my second bass I couldn't get my main bass set up because I always needed it. Having another bass definitely puts my mind at ease. You never know when you'll need it.

    Wish Bass - Your Experiences?

I just bought a wishbass off craigslist. It's about four years old and hasn't had any modifications done to it. It plays really well and sounds great. It's definitely one of my main basses now. But I'm fairly certain I got really lucky with the buy. I've read a lot about how you almost always...
