It is an octave fuzz, but the octave is garbage. It can only track about 6 notes of my 4 octave range. That's part of why I was hoping to build more minimalist version with just the parts I like. But, it's sounding like a French Toast and ignoring the octave function might be the way to go.

This would mean that it isn't based on the Foxx Tone Machine, yes? So something like the French Toast is unlikely to do it?

That's probably a good idea. People here have been knowledgeable and helpful before, but I suppose buying things and building things are different skill sets. I'll post this elsewhere too.

Adding more info, this is a picture of the other side of the board, the fuzz is activated by the button on the right side. I'd really appreciate any help or info anyone can give me.
