Whats the deal with the bigger-than-normal-"hole" for the neck pickup? I mean, for $21.400 Geddy Lee Signature Fender Jazz Bass it seems not so great,

I own a American Fender Elite P-bass and i felt the same. I removed the preamp and replaced the pu´s with Seymour Duncan QP PJ and wired everything passive. Since i liked the bass the natural thing for me was to keep it and rewire it. Nothing i will regrett since it sound great now.

AFAIK none of the Ultra basses are MIM. Their names are Fender American Ultra and i have never seen Fender Mexican Ultra so there must be another bass you played, probably a Fender Player Plus that looks almost the same.

Interesting, i contacted them in the mid 90´s and asked them if they could build me an 8-string bass, eE-aA-dD-gG, but the answer was no. Maybe there is a small chance that it will be possible now, but i doubt that...

AFAIK it´s not possible to change covers on the DiMarzio pic since they are hold together with epoxy. Buying a new pickup is the only option.

I just bought an Ultra P that has the very same issue. I bought the Ultra J when it came out that did NOT have this issue, so it seems like issues like this pass QC without no one noticing it. Will take the bass apart tomorrow and just switch the cables of the J-pickup to hopefully fix it since...
