If I were you i would go for a "warwick corvette $$" as i have a "warwick corvette basic" and i play with my fingers and I get a very nice sound for the rock songs my band plays. This bass costs about £650 which works out at about $1330 - 1500. But that is only my opinion, so good luck and...

I have played one at a sound control near me it was a 5 string SPECTOR REBOP 4 DLX. (BASSTEBAN why do you always say that think about "words that are spoken can......." :confused: )

What bass is like a warwick but has a slightly heavier sound. Please tell me any type of bass you know.:D

My first gig was at the "sound haus" in Glasgow. My band Plays rock and i used a warwick covertte basic.

One more thing. I know this is string section but whats the best practise amp to get for about £150 ($300).
