Have you ever noticed that it's not just the basses which show scrolls? Main reason for big scrolls is lowering the first eigenfrequency of the instrument: https://www.acs.psu.edu/drussell/guitars/hummingbird.html This 1st eigenfrequency should be lower than lowest note of the instrument.
