Is this the kind of "woody" you're describing? I can approximate it on my Geddy with a favoring of the neck pick up and some really old roundwounds, so you could give that a try if you have any older strings laying around. But for a new bass, like many others have said, a P probably do the job.

Definitely Matt Freeman, Mike Watt, Paul Simonon. Honestly Mike Dirnt and Hoppus really served the songs they were playing as well, but I'm not exactly a punk connoisseur.

I think many would be surprised at some of the lesser known works by even the most mainstream pop artists. For example, listen to Invalid Link Removed (or most songs produced by J.U.S.T.I.C.E league), complete with a full live strings section.

Really being able to play and solo over Giant Steps is definitely a blackbelt sort of song.

Something about the Modulus Q5 just didn't really sit right with me. They're awesome looking basses, and they sound great in the right hands. Just not in mine...
