Bruce Foxton or Fred Smith get my vote. and yes i consider both The Jam and Television to be punk enough for this.

I knew there would be the "isn't good punk bass an oxymoron?" dudes...sorry to break it to any of the snobs, but there are great players in EVERY genre, even the ones you don't like. I know some 'serious' legit classical players who play and love punk. And to the dudes who say different...try sitting in for Karl Alvarez...you wouldn't last 5 minutes.

Chris #2: I'd say he's very technical for punk, bass line in The Press Corpse verse rocks hard!!
For anyone interested: Shadow of the Dead; Sodom, Gomorrah, Washington DC; The Bright Lights of America; Hymn for a Dead; We Are the One.
All contain great bass lines!
Joe Principe (Rise Against) is underrated as well (within the genre): Black Masks & Gasoline; The Dirt Whispered; Endgame; Like the Angel; Life Less Frightning.
I agree that they're not punk like the Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols and what not so no flaming please, especially Rise Against, which have become more and more pop with every album. They're still great bassists.

Definitely Matt Freeman, Mike Watt, Paul Simonon. Honestly Mike Dirnt and Hoppus really served the songs they were playing as well, but I'm not exactly a punk connoisseur.
zombie thread ha. but ill play along too ill vote dee dee ramone. or op ivy era matt freeman the new rancid doesnt compair to operation ivy when it comes to basslines. also an interesting fact about Geouf krisige... old afi's bass player before they sucked but he was only playing bass for about 3 months before he joined up with afi that guy could tear it up on the bass.
