Green Day is some pretty major talent, even though it's apparently cool to bash...my son fancies himself a punk connoisseur and dismisses them as sellouts, etc. They may not be punk, but call them what you will. It's not simple to write such catchy and melodic songs, and the musicianship is solid. That drummer is a badass. I like em.

Every Time I hear the words Green Day and Punk used in the same sentence I want to stab myself in the eye with a spork!

Truthfully, classifying music in any genre is pretty subjective anyway. I understand it helps separate personal tastes and what not so we kind of half to accept it. Sure there are fundamental things that make Jazz Jazz, and Rock Rock but it's the Music not the Image that should make the distinction.

So in that context of things, Green day was bubble gum pop at the start, turned Top 40. The only reason why Bands like Green day get classified under some category is not because of their MUSIC unfortunately it's because of their ******** Image.

Funny Story... 1992, went to 924 Gillman for a $5 weekend of "underground fun". Green day somehow manged to get booked... Played 1/2 of one song and was booed out of the joint so fast it wasn't funny.

I guess the bottom line here is I respect a lot of Music that gets classified as Punk but when you put something like Britney spears in that category it tends to make people crazy. It's insulting to the people that have followed that Genre of Music for years and have struggled to get others to open their ears and minds long enough to even attempt to appreciate it for what it is. Because there really is some incredible Music to be found In that Genre. However mislabeling a crappy Pop band into that genre just gives it a bad name. Can you honestly listen to Fugazi and Green Day and find a similarity?

My opinion:

First off, Green Day doesn't classify themselves as "punk"; only haters argue about their "punk" status and perception. Personally, I see them as carrying on in the tradition of the Ramones, playing punk-derived music in a popular format.

Second, whether Green Day is "punk" or not, their musical style is derived in fair part from punk. Furthermore, some of their songs are just as "incorrect" as anything the Pistols or Kennedys ever did.

Third, I have never gotten why so many self-anointed "punk" elitists think it's a crime to be commercially successful. I think it's jealousy; after all, the only difference between Green Day and a LOT of "punk" bands is that Green Day was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to catch a record company's attention. If Green Day was playing the same music but still living hand to mouth instead of being successful, those hypocrite elitists would probably still be praising them as "punk". Green Day scored, your band didn't; guess what? Life isn't fair. THAT'S punk. Get over it.

I'm not going against Green Day, though, since, for that level of success, I'd've done the exact same thing in a heartbeat! And the fact that they do have a few good albums (the early ones) helps, too!

If you can count Fishbone as punk, their bassist is definetly the best of punk.
