The Stranglers were NOT really punk, they were too good, ok they wrote some loud songs but they always had a bit of quality as musicians which most punk bands lacked at the time .
They were a very good and individual rock band with atittude, shame they went all radio friendly, like most of them did, I suppose you gotta earn a crust
They were lucky to be around at the time of the punk bandwagon, it won them a lot of fans and rightly so
So there we have it, the two best punk bassists, JJ Burnel (who was not really a punk) and Klaus Fluoride who most definitely was, the Dead Kennedys NEVER compromised their punk atittude for pop success

So did/do lots of bands, it does not make them punk !!the band had the attitude, the image and the agressive sound for punk
