Double Bass Mic OR Amp + Upright = ??

Hi, I have looked at many threads here before posting this question, but haven't found exactly what I'm hoping for... Is it better (in general) to put a mic in front of the bass, or use an amplifier? I'm playing a small set (1 song with guitar and hand drum, 3 songs with full band), and...

    Make the drummer funky???

Calm down Thor. I liked you idea to start a funky groove when all are quiet. I actually tried that with a Galactic tune they said they knew... "Church." It was pretty bad.

    Make the drummer funky???

More good stuff... didn't really think about how the guitarists were "helping" the drummer. Like I said, I've only jammed with these guys once, but they've been playing together for a while... without a bassist. I'll give 'em a few more nights to see if they can groove!

    Make the drummer funky???

Thanks jaywa, that's kinda what I was thinking... it will be painful though. It doesn't help that 2 of the guitarists can't swing either... very metal. Again, my current situations prevents me from being too picky with who I can play with. Something is better than nothing! Maybe it'll give...

    Make the drummer funky???

Ha. The funny thing is these guys like me! They think we make a "tight rhythm section." His time is good, just straight as an arrow. I need a laid back feel, it's just more fun that way... I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir though. Haven't known this fella long enough to make any...

    Make the drummer funky???

So I started jamming with a group of guys (3 guitars, 1 drummer). The drummer is pretty tense/tight, straight-up driving rock. I offered "Chameleon" (Herbie Hancock), and "Church" (Galactic), but he made them both anything but funky. I can't change the man, but I'm wondering if y'all had...

    Double Bass basic jazz instruction

Well, a teacher would be best. But, to answer your question... I've found the Rufus Reid "Evolving Bassist" dvd to be helpful... but not a replacement for a teacher. It does not show "basic technique," you need a teacher for that. IMHO it is good for a general Jazz direction. It's a good...

Double Bass Best bow for about $150?

Well, I like my Upton german bow. It's my 1st bow, and I'm a new UB user so I don't have anything to compare it to. I had a bit of a problem with how it was haired (didn't affect the playing at all, just the appearance), which Upton was more than happy to fix for me. I'm lucky enough to...
