The balance does what you assume, there's a notch in the centre for both pickups, and then rolled off to the right is the bridge pickup solo, and the neck is all the way to the left. As for the contour switch, it's described as a mid scoop, but I seem to find it does the opposite of the mid EQ...

I accidentally ordered two thumb rests from fender instead of one and I thought here's an idea: why not install both of them instead of sending one back, they were only $10 anyway. I'd put one of the E string side as a thumb rest in the normal place and one on the G string side as a tug bar...

I wasn't trying to be rude, or even judgemental. I was just curious, the most expensive bass I've seen was about $2,500 and the most I've read about before this thread was about $5000 or so (excluding vintage). I wasn't judging you guys or your basses I was just asking what sets these apart from...

The reflected light theory also sounds plausible to me. I see the reflections on the headstock on my ibanez sometimes, have the bass been sitting in the sun for a while? Also, did you not notice the marks before you took your strings off?

I think it has something to do with the pressure of the strings on the tuning pegs. It does look like bent plastic. Maybe the machine heads aren't too great or aren't installed properly and are pushing on the top of the headstock and causing it to bend... I dunno, just throwing ideas out there...
