Has anyone modded their bass to add some kind of light for the passive/active pickup switch being on? I have been looking for an option to add some kind of notification that the active pickups are on so that I don't forget (and kill my batteries). This seems to be a design miss.

Have a look at a Sire Basses. The V3 and M2 are very much in your price range and have both passive and active pickups. I have a V7 5-string which I love. For the money, you can't beat the quality and tone.
