It is possible to learn right handed. If you're going to, now would be the time. Once you learn on either hand, switching is nearly impossible.

Look for a good used bass. One with a straight neck. Make sure the strings aren't to high off the fret board, and that it stays in tune. If you get one that plays good, and responds well, you should be on your way to rock stardom in no time. Good luck!
