I dunno. My own experience buying guitars not basses says pass at $999. Handmade doesn't always translate to well made. Also at that price you expect some resale value and I'm not sure it's there. I thinking more of a $499 bass and even that is iffy.

For me the real issue on unusual instruments is the time to buy is when you see it! Like a lot of folks here I think it's a bit pricey. I might offer them at least a little less and see if they bite. Like always on used equipment is you buys your ticket you takes your chances.
