I'm spoiled too. We rehearse at our guitar player's house, which has a bass amp, drum set, PA, etc. All I take is my bass and my pedal board, our drummer just brings his stick bag. And it's 15-20 minutes from my house. Totally spoiled.

The good news - there are so, so many good options it's hard to go wrong. The bad news - there are so, so many good options, it can induce FOMO or analysis paralysis trying to pick one. If you stick with names like Mesa, Genzler, G-K, Quilter, I'd argue you can't find a bad sounding amp...

Agreed. String changes are the easiest way to experiment with tone/sound, not to mention feel and playability. So often we see threads saying "my bass is missing X from the tone I want, give me pickup recommendations". While of course different pickups will change it, usually the first thing...

On the budget-friendly side as you say, I'd definitely lean Yamaha. I played the lowest-tier BB 5 string in a shop and was impressed by how good it was for $400 or whatever. I imagine the mid-tier 735 and the top-line BBP35 are great. The only thing I'd mention as a possible deal breaker...
