We also do it in the middle of a song by repeating a verse/chorus or whatever makes sense. The WL asks people to greet to start and asks them to join in singing to signal the end. The band just plays instrumentally during this.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Larry Coryell yet. He's often mentioned, along with Miles Davis, as one of the primary originators of the fusion genre. I remember owning "Spaces" and "Introducing the Eleventh House" in the early 70s. I believe also collaborated with Jon McGlaughlin.
