Very low action (I like too) gets tricky the lower you go. Those upper frets are indeed often the first to complain. Unless the upper neck is perfect (no 'ski jump' and/or high frets), it can get pretty involved, including the other end, ie nut/slots. If those things are over your skill level...

Assuming all else equal (as possible), Gen2 is distinctly clearer/sweeter in the upper registers. I'm immediately reminded of Marcus' tone.

At the lower end of the P tone, Pino's on this track is among the smoothest, thickest, juiciest beef I've ever heard:

Iconic basses, like an old car but still built the same way today. Not my taste, my 'classic' needs are met by Fender tanks, but more power to Ric lovers - enjoy.

Haven't read thru all posts but two things: I do see a lot of 4 strings, but as mentioned by the OP also hear a lot of down tuning (or even restringing B E A D plus downtuning as required) outright. Seems many players like the neck of a 4 and the sound of a 5. After all, if you never play high...

P Bass imho as well. It just keeps on keeping on, appealing to generation after generation of players with it's simple, in your ears and/or gut electronics. That's an icon.

Depends on paradigm, yours or the audience. I remember a gig some years ago where the bassist was playing a nice Fender J through a loud but not very good sounding amp/cabinet. It was muffled and at least one driver rattled - crowd loved it. Why? Because he was a killer bassist, chops for days...

'Faking' to your own specially prerecorded track for a special appearance of this kind to ensure no hiccups - fine. Even the vocals could have been prerecorded imho. I'd take that job all week long. 'Faking' your own prerecorded stuff on your own shows, as a habit - different story.

^thet raht thur I get your point, but I'd replace 'better' with 'different'. There's a time and place when that muddier fretted note serves the particular tune better.
