My advice is do whatever you wanna do :) Anything that feels right in your hands and sounds good is the choice you should make. It can be anything whether fretted, fretless, fan fretted, string count etc. Dont let certain things hinder you

Definitely good points on both sides. A musician/group or band will do whatever see fit with what they want to do. But displaying advanced technical prowess isn't self indulgence, its showing hard work and ability that you worked hard for. (Also a lot more fun to play) But at the same time...
