the only ebony ive heard this being a problem with is gabon, and why manufacturers use other ebonies and dye it dark black instead.

that is absolutely ridiculous. i charge 300 more for snakewood on a guitar (more on a bass), and ive seen builders charge 500-550 more and up for a snakewood board. the last 3 necks ive built with ebony boards got a $50 upcharge. basically the wood cost if i had to buy the fingerboard from...

ok, reading through this thread, and other "tone" threads, i see people saying rosewood is brighter than ebony, and then i see others saying opposite. so.....forever, ive always heard, until the last few years, people saying ebony is a brighter wood on a fingerboard, and rosewood is more...

and heres how the boards darkened..... also a neck thru 1 piece bocote, extremely darkened, its old......there is no oil or anything on the 2 necks. i did run some of that fast fret stick on the one with no inlays shortly after it was made, and you can see that darkened it even more and it...

a week after i built these, they were a LOT darker, now they are very dark. no finish whatsoever. ill try to take a pic of them as they sit now.....

bocote darkens very quickly. there will be a huge difference in just a weeks time after youve finished sanding the board. using boiled linseed oil will make the board extremely dark over time to where it will take much away from the distinction in the grain. bocote is very oily, it really dosent...

if you ordered it from warmoth, they have finishing services that are much cheaper than taking it to a professional finisher. your best bet is just pick the finish you want on their site, and have them do it before it gets shipped to you......

once you have the color or base coat of what you want, shoot some acrylic lacquer over it. about 10 minutes later, or when it becomes just hard enough to the touch to not leave a fingerprint, shoot a coat of nitro lacquer over that. watch it for a little while. if you dont get the desired...

ive never had a problem with a flatsawn fingerboard.....go for it.

im posting this after reading your last thread and this one. you can take this with a grain of salt, or not. sounds like you have little to no experience doing this, so here goes. if you think removing the finish is too hard, wait till you try and get a good finish with little to no experience...

i have inlaid a friends moses neck with abalone diamonds, it was really no different than doing any other board......
