If the ends of the bass bar come loose, has the top moved or has the bar moved? One end has previously been glued, the other end (near the tailpiece) is about 1/2 away from the top and there are cracks under and next to it. This is a Christopher bass that has given me fits ever since new...

I have a school bass with a broken neck. The neck is split through the heel. The mortise and tenon joint is very poorly fit. There is at least 1/4 inch gap in some spots. I want to shim the joint in order to reattach this neck. Should I use maple or spruce?
