The best J style bass you've ever played?

I use a 24 and love it! Some don’t like the preamp but I think it’s very giggable.

Flatwounds or Tapewounds on a fretless with magnetic AND piezzo pick ups?

I’ve got the 5 string version of this Spectracore, and am using Labella low tension flats. That can deliver the sound you want, but also can be woodier with both pickups cranked and a bit of treble rolled off.

Super-J you know and would recommend?

I picked up a Korean 24 Jazz and it has become my primary gigging bass. The feel and sound options are amazing, and it’s flat black, which is also great.

How many have had amps over 10 years and still use them?

Fender Dual Showman with the 4x12 cab…97 Pedulla MPV5, I also have a 15 year old Hartke kickback.

    The Pedulla Club!

Mine has the same issue. I have not dealt with it and it’s not getting any worse.

What year did you start playing bass?

    1971…I was 14

What gave you the sound you have been searching for?

Found the bass to produce the sound I like...still on fence on the amp. I really like the presence of my hartke kickback 12, but don’t like the tone limitations of a single 12. I mostly like the sound of the Rumble 200, but it still sounds a little processed to me. However, I need to hear each...

    The Pedulla Club!

I probably have about a guitar pick width gap when fretting the 1st and 12th fret

Fewer Basses but you know them better?

The more I play the MPV, the more I think it might be the only one I need. It sounds way different on different parts of the neck, and also where my plucking hand sits. It’s probably the most versatile and playable bass I’ve ever owned. And it’s beat up just enough to deter most thieves...kinda...

Intentional irony: A good bassist on an inexpensive bass

I admit to being a bit of a gear snob, but a bass has to feel right, produce the tone appropriate for the gig, stay in tune, and not be too fragile. In 45 years of playing, I’ve had 2 like that..a 62 Jazz and my current MPV 5. Looks are totally irrelevant to me, but everyone should play what...

What gave you the sound you have been searching for?

Pedulla MPV 5 with Elixer Nickel nanowebs..extra light B string Surprisingly, after a lot of experimentation with G & L, P bass...Yamaha PJ active 4 string with medium gauge bright flats. Hartke combo amp

    This, right here, is wisdom!

Sight reading - open or fretted notes?

If I am reading a chart for the first time, I’ll scan to see what part of the fretboard I want to use. Are there lots of big jumps? If so, I either mark them so I’m not surprised or simplify for the first reading. If I’m sight reading fast swing, I’ll probably use a bunch of open strings the...

    Double Bass Downtuning for Jazz

I like using my 5, especially when reading jazz charts. It gives me a few more easy options across the neck, for times when the arrangement moves from a high note, like Eb them immediately down 2 octaves...
