Double Bass Back to metal (from guts)

Velvet strings are another good option, though avoid the garbos like the plague for bowing.

Double Bass Silver Creek Thumper upright acoustic bass

For the Kay vs Shen, it really depends on what types of music your son wants to play. Kays are sort of like the Alfa Romeo of the jazz bass world: not the greatest thing out there but kind of a rite of passage. They are NOT a great classical instrument (I've seen classical players avoid Kays...

    Double Bass RIP Terry Plumeri

Just heard that Terry Plumeri was murdered at his home in Florida. What a tragedy, absolutely beautiful player. I hope they find whoever committed this horrible crime and bring them to justice.

Double Bass 3 minute long All-County audition piece

Bottesini's Elegy, it's free on imslp. Definitely check out the Joel Quarrington recording.

Double Bass Strings for young players

I'm also onboard with the Helicore Orchestras. Most shops I know put those on as the default strings for starter basses.

Double Bass Who's your favorite Bill Evans bassist?

So tough to say, basically all of my favourite bassists, minus Charlie Haden and Dave Holland played with Bill at some point. meandering picked out some of the best ones, and though I'd be quick to say LAFARO, I also have a particular "affinity"(pun definitely intended) for Marc Johnson's...

Double Bass Left Handed Upright Bass

I've played lefty on electric for a while now, but when I picked up double bass a few years back I decided to just play righty. Seriously, never regretted it.

Double Bass Bass for University Level Jazz Student

Steve, you're right. I don't plan to buy a new bass until a year or so into college. My current bass isn't too shabby, I'd just like to get something a little higher quality, at some point in the foreseeable future.

Double Bass Bass for University Level Jazz Student

Yeah I'd like to hit some actual shops up north, see what they have sitting around. I've listened to Paul Warburton and definitely like his playing. I got the idea of a five string from listening to Red Mitchell, but not wanting to tune in fifths. I don't think I'd use the low B TOO much though...

Double Bass Any idea what I'm looking at here?

I know Framus builds basses with the single cutaway, but I think the cutaways on those are a little different. Take it into a luthier, see what they can figure out.

Recording myself on different basses is a great idea. I don't really want to spend 10 grand, but if I find something I really love, I could rationalize at that price, but not much higher on my budget.

Double Bass What happened to Rinat?

It's very tragic. Rinat is great, but then again, so is Joel Quarrington, so I don't think that the bass section will miss a beat in recovering.
