    Double Bass Steve Molina’s bass

Beer basses were popular in the 19th century. Cello-sized bass that the player strapped on and carried while traveling with the band. They were similar to the church bass. I don't know if there was any difference. It was a beer bass on Saturday night and a church bass come Sunday morning.

    Double Bass Steve Molina’s bass

He said the name of the builder but I forgot it. Might have been Italian. He said it was built in 1802. It's larger than a beer bass but smaller than modern basses. Sounds fantastic though.

    Double Bass Steve Molina’s bass

Steve Molina after a show today. He’s talking to my bass instructor. They were both students of Robert Gladstone.

Yes. I went to see the DSO do "Egmont" with Werner Klemperer narrating.

    Double Bass Herman C. Reinshagen

For years now, I've tried to find a photo of Herman Reinshagen with no luck but I left enough inquiries around the internet that his grand nephew, Terry Grissino, contacted me and sent me this photo. Herman C. Reinshagen was a student of Ludwig Manoly and was a great pedagogue with students as...

Double Bass My new bass is an old bass

You're right, these are Thomastik strings. I got them from a pal who stuffed the sleeves into an Pirastro box. I always save sleeves. When I looked at the sleeves, they are, in fact, Thomastik Infeld Vienna Super Flexibles. Maybe that's why I thought there was some kind of connection between...

Double Bass My new bass is an old bass

The original lineup of the Tattletales recorded an original called "Why Do You Have to Go Home" in 1953 which my uncle wrote the music for and the trumpet man, Larry Gilbert, wrote the lyrics. I think it came out on Dee Gee Records just before Larry and Jerri left the group. Pete Rugolo, who...

Isn't there a link between Thomastik and Pirastro?

Double Bass My new bass is an old bass

Most people who buy an old bass don't often know the provenance or have photographic proof of it so this is unusual. I found a couple more photos of the original Tattletales' lineup where the bass is visible: Her name was Jerri Adams not Gerry. Wasn't Gerry Adams the leader of Sinn Fein...

Double Bass My new bass is an old bass

My cousin shipped the b as via the Quantum Bass Center who make these big bass crates. First I had to buy a gig bag for the bass and then she had to fit the whole thing in the crate. When it finally arrived in Detroit, I couldn't believe how huge the crate was. Massive. I took the bass out...

Double Bass My new bass is an old bass

This is a photo of the Tattletales from Detroit. The founder is my late uncle, Lee Tompkins on bass. He was a professional bassist then. They started as the Teddy Raymore Quartet out of Cincinnati. Raymore did not want to tour so they replaced him and changed their name and relocated. Their...

Please be serious. I need to find out who this guy is. This is a serious inquiry. Thank you.
