    why play bass

I AM a lead guitarist and band leader. But in my other band, I'm the bassist. Why do one when you can do both? I've always loved playing bass, never seen it as a lesser instrument.

If you couldn't play Bass anymore......

I play guitar as much as I play bass, so that. Been playing baritone guitar more than either recently. Also I play lap steel so that's another possibility. If I was banned from the whole guitar/bass family of instruments... I'd take up electronica. Synths, drum machines, samples. I've always...

    Gig Footwear?

Chuck Taylor hi tops (black or blue) when the weather is warm Dr Martens 1460s (black or red) when it's cooler I have other shoes but the above is my usual stage wear. I draw the line at sandals onstage, for me, but I wouldn't dictate what anyone else can/should wear; that's fascism.

Where you "drafted" to play bass or enlist ?

Enlisted. I'm mostly a guitarist, and I play lead in my own band. But I've always loved bass too, so when an opportunity came along to play bass with some good people, I volunteered. And no, I'm not one of those guitarists that overplays on bass and gives us bass-playing guitarists a bad name...

A Journey to the Dark Side

I am a guitarist, perfectly capable of playing lead guitar, and that's what I've usually done in bands. That's what I do in the band I write for. I also love the bass, and in my girlfriend's band, I am the bassist. I am very much not the kind of guitarist who plays "lead bass" - I'm not a fan of...

Used to be a guitar player?

I still am mainly a guitarist. Bass is my second love, though I do love it. I play bass like a bassist and guitar like a guitarist.

    Body Wood Type: the difference?

Before getting into an internet debate about the "tonal properties" of body woods in solid body guitars/basses, I'd recommend you spend a while learning about critical thinking and cognitive biases, and most especially Confirmation bias. After you've digested that, it's not too hard to...

Tick Tack 6 String Bass Question...

Well, any short-scale-six will sound similar to that. As to whether it's the exact same sound, that's more a matter of opinion. My Ultra VI is a very different beast to a Dano longhorn, but to my ears it doesn't sound all that different, particularly using the bridge pickup alone. There's a...

Tick Tack 6 String Bass Question...

The AFFORDABLE option is Schecter: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] I have an Ultra VI, it's great. For a more vintage-style B6, there's the Hellcat, which has just been redesigned for a new model with single-coil pickups: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

    Hagstrom Viking Bass Reissue.

They couldn't get away with that headstock these days; Fender would sue the pants off them. For what it's worth I own a recent Hag Viking guitar, and I love it.

Vintage Modified Jaguar Club Sign-Ups Here

I somehow missed this thread until now. Here's mine (a bigger version of my avatar pic): It's stock - I'm usually a tinkerer, but I gave it a chance and came to the conclusion that it's fine as is.

    Ashbory (Guild/DeArmond/Fender) Club

Agreed, the Aquilas reach stability a lot quicker. They're a lot less hassle in every way, which makes up for the somewhat less bassy sound, in my opinion. The difference in sound quality isn't that much, and a bit of EQ twiddling will probably sort that out anyway. So, the Aquilas stay on.

    Ashbory (Guild/DeArmond/Fender) Club

OK, I decided to try the Aquila strings on my Ashbory. I've been using Pahoehoe stings for a while now, so my comparisons are with them, more than with the stock strings. My opinion so far is that I prefer the sound of the Pahoehoes, but I prefer the feel of the Aquilas. The Aquilas have...

    Mudbuckers: A Misnomer

You know what irritates me? When people call humbuckers "hums" for short. No, you numbnut, HUM is what they DON'T do. Call them buckers, like I do, because BUCKing the hum is what they DO. ...and you know who cares? No one. I'm not going to change one single person's habit of calling...
