You should do what ever makes it more comfortable and easier for you to play. For most of my basses I anchor off the pickups, but my mustang has the small round ones that don't stick out so far so thinking of 3d printing ones that attach though the pick guard screw holes.

The Fender Vintera II 70's Competition Mustang has the belly cut on the back. I think there may be a squire mustang that does as well, but can't remember which one. I have a Vintera I Mustang which like you say is slab side but actually isn't too bad, but I would prefer a contoured model.

I ordered the green one from fender with the welcome10 discount over the weekend. Today Musicians friend has green or black on Labor Day sale for $349 which is $55 less then from fender with the discount.
