I have an Ampeg Micro-CL stack and it is terrific. Its a 2x10 setup and can get quite loud if you need. If you don't, it still provides great punch and is within your budget. http://www.ampeg.com/products/classic/microcl/

Great point! Add the following: 6. Fenders are widely available. 7. Any luthier will know their way around one. 8. Tons and tons of variety (colors, 4/5 strings, active/passive, fretted/frettless, etc.)

Extra holes in my pickguard would drive me absolutely mad! Great looking basses though - makes me yearn for the straighforward-ness of a P bass. Blending jazz bass pickups isn't always easy or rewarding!
