    NBD - Ovation Magnum IV

I bought one in the early 80's and am still kicking myself for selling it 15 years later. I have had and have many basses of various makes and models and that one was, by far, my fav. If only we could go back to then, knowing what we know now.

    Bass Meme War! Go!!

Thank you for that picture. When I was a young lad.....many moons ago.....this was my dream amp to go with a P Bass. Couldn't afford either at the time. Was playing a Monkey Ward Bass through a Ward Amp. Loved it anyway..

Is an Acoustic bass worth it

Never really cared for the sound or feel of an acoustic bass (had a couple over the years) until I picked up a resonator bass at my local candy store. Got it on a whim (and for cheap) and almost immediately decided it was will worth having when I'm hanging with my acoustic buddies. There's no...

Is an Acoustic bass worth it

I was in our local shop one day and a (nameless - seriously, no markings on it of any kiind) resonator bass jumped out at me as I walked by. Don't believe I've ever seen one before but thought, "what a great idea". At that point I had to have it. Comes in real handy when I get into acoustic jams...

What's your approach to having more than one bass? Purely tone, or are there other reasons?

I have 4 in my collection right now. Fretless Jazz with flats, Rickenbacher 4003W with round wound for a punchy sound, a modded Jackson Concert that I removed the fret markers and opened the nut to accept the bottom 4 strings of 5 string set giving me that little extra reach on the lower end and...

At what age have you started playing bass?

Piano at 6, drums at 11. Played in a couple kiddie bands and at 14 realized that you couldn't swing a dead cat around our area without hitting a drummer but there were no bass players in the area to speak of. Went to Monkey Wards and picked up an Airline bass and Amp. Started playing and within...

Do you enjoy practicing/playing by yourself?

There is nothing like bouncing creative ideas off the talent around you but I also find that in my at home studio. Far from a pro set up but I have enough digital recording equipment available to run through a couple-3 jams on guitar, banjo...whatever and then pick up the bass and play (along)...

    Acoustic Basses worth it?

I was in Drome Sound in Schenectady, NY one fine afternoon (not to buy - yeah right!?! - just to browse).....and came across this used, no name, cheap ($99) resonator bass hanging high up on the wall with the used acoustic guitars. Had one of the guys get it down for me and after 5 or 6 notes...

    NBD: Ricky 4003sw

Got one (not as new). One of those instruments that, the first time you pick it up, makes you realize you're better at this than you thought.

    Why play a four string?

The need for a couple steps lower gave me many sleepless nights trying to figure out whether a 5 string needed to be in my collection. Then one day it occurred to me...... why... not... open the grooves on the nut and put b, e, a, d strings on one of my 4 string basses. It worked perfectly and...
