Double Bass How to Fix your Broken Kay Tuning Key

After you make a new "paddle" out of thin brass stock, silver solder it. I had trouble with buzzing and traced it to loose tuner paddles. I soldered them all and never looked back! Fog

Double Bass Tuning machine key failing - weld or braze?

If you do solder it, make sure to put a heat sink on the shaft to keep the heat from the screw and gear area. A small wet cloth around the sensitive area will do that trick!

Double Bass Tuning machine key failing - weld or braze?

Fixed this on my Kay C-1. I silver soldered it. In fact, while I was at it I did the other 3 tuners also! People other than jewelers can silver solder

Double Bass Humidity for hybrid bass

Baggy/string with a damp sponge hung from one of the bass F hole "knobs"--at least my bass bar and post area will have enough moisture through the winter. Fog

Double Bass adjustable soundpost – Anima Nova

Martin, For you to assume my comment as a "personal insult" is amazing to me! When me and ALL the people I know think of Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, Andrea Mitchell, Rachel Maddow, Brit McHenry (ESPN sideline babe who tore into the parking garage lady claiming "She is on TV and you are...

Double Bass adjustable soundpost – Anima Nova

As a "Root and a 5th" plywood Kay guy, I shouldn't even be messing around this bass forum but I just can't help keeping quiet when I read something so off the track----the Everest climbing thing, on a bass repair and set-up thread no less. "I interviewed him as a CBC reporter"-----hardly lends...

Double Bass Storing my bass: In "direct" sunlight vs next to a radiator

I keep my plywood Kay on a stand in a corner but with a "baggie"/string,damp sponge combo, hanging inside from a F hole round thingy. I sometimes wonder, who was watching my bass when I was in the 4th grade (1947)? Boy, I sure am glad I don't have to watch over a carved old Italian beauty! Fog

Double Bass Tinnitus and Practicing. Please HELP! (DB Forum Thread)

Chet Baker, the great jazz trumpeter once said "It takes an outstanding drummer to beat no drummer!" I agree, but its too late for me, I've got tinnitus also. Fog

Double Bass Finally starting another new Bass

You've got me hooked now, I'm outstanding at watching good work being done! It's tough enough nowdays, but was thinking about the ol' guys "back in the day" making basses without all the good stuff/tools/hardware or even electricity!

Double Bass Is My Bridge Upside Down?

99.99% of bridges have their flat, 90 degrees to the bass, side towards the tailpiece. It's that way to help resist the pressure of the strings to flop the bridge up towards the fret board (This will ruin most of your day!). Hell, maybe everybody's been wrong for about 500 years! Fog

Double Bass Need a tail-piece cable?

I play a 1947 Kay with Innovation Super Silvers and it does fine for me with no problems. Just lately I've heard mumblings in the forecastle about trouble in my future with the old Kay wire tail set-up. Should I preemptively change to the airplane cable thing (I can do that stuff) and if I do...

Double Bass Manufacturing Delay: Innovation Strings (Updated)

At least the short respite moved me off dead center, I found and bought a back-up set out in Ariz. and they are on the way. Good news on Innovation moving to a new site-----they met a need in the bass community! Wish them continued success! Fog

Double Bass Manufacturing Delay: Innovation Strings (Updated)

I must be the kiss of death, I bolted up a set of Super Silver's and loved them. Was thinking about getting a set of back ups---well forget that now! Fog
